How Do You Maintain a Metal Roof?

There are lots of benefits to having a metal roof. A metal roof lasts much longer than shingles, is very weather resistant and energy efficient, and comes in a variety of options. But if you go with a metal roof, how do you maintain it? Believe it or not, metal roofs actually require minimal maintenance and upkeep as compared to other types of materials. Here’s what you need to know to properly maintain a metal roof and get the most out of your investment.

Keep the Gutters Clean
Annually, it’s important to clean the gutters, down spouts, and drains to make sure leaves and debris don’t back up and cause any leaks or damage. A build up of leaves or dirt on top of the metal can also cause water to not evaporate or run off appropriately, leading to corrosion.

Trim Tree Branches
Keep tree branches and limbs trimmed back so that they do not touch the roof—they can damage the finish of the roof or do even more damage during a strong wind or storm.

Clean as Needed
An annual cleaning with some gentle detergent and a power washer can keep a metal roof looking like new without stripping the coating of the metal. A deep cleaning with stronger detergents should be done every three to five years, depending on the environmental conditions of your home.

Check Recommendations First
Before using any cleaning products on your metal roof, be sure to check with the manufacturer’s recommendations or directions for cleaning of the metal.

Turn to a Professional
Working on a roof can be dangerous, so if you’re not comfortable to—or experienced work—walk around on the roof, call in the professionals. A professional company can help keep your roof clean with an annual visit.
