Do You Qualify for the Strengthen Alabama Homes Program?

Metal Roofing Center & Supply is proud to announce that it is now a qualified contractor with the Strengthen Alabama Homes (SAH) program.

The SAH program was enacted by the Alabama State Legislature in 2011 to help Alabama homeowners update and modify their homes to better withstand hurricanes and other catastrophic windstorm events.

The program provides financial assistance to qualifying residents of Baldwin and Mobile Counties for residential work done specifically on existing, owner occupied, and single family homes. The wind mitigation—strengthening the home to withstand a severe storm—not only reduces property damage, but also gives homeowners discounts to their wind insurance premium and deductible.

To be eligible for the grant, the wind mitigation work must meet certain standards of the FORTIFIED Home ™ program, which is the mitigation standard adopted by the SAH program and developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. (IBHS).

To apply for the grant, applicants must have flood insurance if located in a special flood hazard area and be able to provide proof of an in-force wind insurance policy on the home by the completion of the mitigation work. Applicants are also required to pay the fee for the FORTIFIED Home evaluation, which provides needed information to the homeowner and contractor about the mitigation work needed for the home.

If the home passes the evaluation, the homeowner can choose contractors from a list of SAH qualified contractors to get bids on the work, and once all bids are in, work can begin. Then, when the work is completed and, the FORTIFIED designation in Alabama is given and the grant amount is paid.

The grant will only pay 100% of the cost of wind mitigation up to $10,000, so the homeowner is required to pay any additional cost.

Once a home has a FORTIFIED designation in Alabama, the homeowner can receive discounts on their wind insurance policy. Also, studies have shown that homes with the designation sell for approximately 7% more than non-FORTIFIED homes.
